June is the only month of the year to have three birthstones: the pearl, the moonstone, and the alexandrite. Three gems, three origins, three very different characters. Here’s what you need to know about each.

The pearl, the gem born from the living

Unlike other birthstones, the pearl is not a mineral: it forms inside a mollusk (oyster or mussel), in both freshwater and saltwater. Composed of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, its unique luster comes from the nacre, those fine layered coatings that capture light.

We distinguish between natural pearls (very rare), cultured pearls (formed with human intervention), and imitations. A symbol of purity and innocence, the pearl is also associated with the 30th wedding anniversary, the famous "pearl wedding".

Recognizable by its adularescence, this bluish reflection that seems to glide over the stone depending on the angle of view, the moonstone belongs to the feldspar family. Its composition is a double silicate of aluminum and potassium, resulting from a mixture of orthoclase and albite, whose cooling creates alternating layers responsible for this optical phenomenon.

Its color is generally colorless with white, bluish, or yellow reflections, and it is sometimes confused with glass or pale blue chalcedony. Associated with femininity, intuition, and softness, it has captivated since antiquity.

Its hardness ranges from 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a sufficiently robust stone for jewelry, while still being sensitive to shocks: it’s best to avoid impacts and messy storage with other hard stones.

The alexandrite, the chameleon stone

The rarest and most spectacular of the three: the alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl capable of changing color depending on the light: green in daylight, red under incandescent light. This phenomenon, called metamerism, is caused by the presence of traces of chromium in the mineral. Hence its nickname: "emerald by day, ruby by night".

With a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, just below corundum (ruby and sapphire), the alexandrite is significantly more resistant than the pearl or moonstone, making it ideal for daily wear. It symbolizes luck and longevity, a true treasure for those born in June.
